"Managing risk in WIL"

As the new year begins, we look forward to how we can best prepare and support students through WIL experiences. Managing risk is a key issue for WIL practitioners that can directly effect the safety, well being and learning outcomes for students. In this session, discipline groups will be encouraged to discuss and share their approaches to managing risk in WIL at a programmatic or institutional level.

Guest speaker: Lara Pugh, WIL Project Coordinator, University of Wollongong.

Participants are encouraged to think about:

Q1. What are the key issues associated with managing and mitigating risk in WIL experiences?

Q2. According to a Framework for the Quality Assurance of WIL (Campbell et al., 2019), universities have a range of responsibilities in managing student safety and wellbeing prior to, during and after a professional experience activity such as an internship. How does your institution:
a) Ensure student readiness for WIL experiences in terms of safety and wellbeing prior to commencement?
b) Ensure student WIL experiences are safe and supported during the WIL activity?
c) Collect and use feedback from students on safety and wellbeing aspects of WIL experiences?
d) Review partner sites for health and safety and suitability of WIL activities?

Q3. Does your institution take a coordinated approach to managing and mitigating risk in WIL? What are the benefits and challenges in taking a unified approach?
